It's shaped by whether the county answered the records request, whether the deposit came back, whether the fee was real, whether anyone ever had to explain themselves. Small stakes, repeated millions of times — that's the texture of a fair society, or an unfair one.
The legal industry can't serve these fights; the economics don't work, and honestly, that's not the industry's fault. But it means the everyday layer of justice has been quietly unattended for generations — and institutions have learned exactly how much they can get away with inside it. We started the Center because, for the first time, technology makes attending to it possible. Not with more lawyers — with tools.
We're a nonprofit. Everything we release is free and open source, forever. If a tool we build helps one reporter open one file drawer a city wanted closed, that's the mission working.
